As October cools Northeast Ohio, houses in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, and Hudson start making new sounds. Most have ordinary explanations.

Before tracking one down, note when it happens, where it seems to come from, and what else was going on.

Why Homes Creak and Pop

Wood framing, plaster, and drywall contract as nights cool. Many Akron homes were built in the early and middle twentieth century, and older floors and framing tend to be talkative. New cracks, sticking doors, or soft floors are worth a professional look.

Plumbing and Basement Sounds

A bang after the washer shuts off is often water hammer. Sump pumps hum and thump as they cycle, especially after heavy rain. A pump that runs constantly or not at all during storms deserves attention.

Furnace and Radiator Sounds

Furnaces click, hum, and whoosh. Older homes with boilers may hear radiators gurgle or knock when air is trapped. Steam systems can bang if water collects in the pipes. New grinding, squealing, or loud banging is worth a call. If you smell gas, leave and call Enbridge Gas Ohio or 911 from outside.

Wind Whistles and Rattles

Fall wind can whistle through gaps around older windows and doors. Rattling often comes from dryer vents, loose gutters, or branches on the roof.

Squirrels, Raccoons, and Mice

Squirrels are active during the day and often move into attics in fall. Mice and raccoons are more active at night. A licensed wildlife or pest professional can help.

What to Tell the Professional

Describe the sound, where and when you hear it, and what else is running. "The sump pump runs every five minutes even when it hasn't rained" gives a plumber a clear starting point.

If you'd like a recommendation for a local plumber, heating technician, or wildlife professional, just ask. We're happy to share names we know.
